Sleepy Hollow (1999) opening

Sound
-          Slow, eerie music – non-diegetic
-          Music becomes more dramatic as the opening goes on, build tension
-          The music is quick paced as the carriage moves – matches the horses quick movements
-          The music is quite sharp and quick
Camera shots
-          Close up of man and woman holding hands
-          Close up of drops of red wax – connote blood
-          Close ups of a letter – focusing on certain words: “corpse to the grave”, a name and “witnessed by” – connotes murder
-          Close up of candle burning red wax
-          Close ups of a crest printed into the wax
-          Mid shot of the same crest on the carriage, camera then moves up to show man in the carriage – makes connection

-          Zoom in – show importance of object
-          Tracking the carriage to follow the action
-          Pans a scarecrow with a pumpkin head – connotes Halloween; fear and danger
